Instant life insurance coverage for smokers

Reader question:

I would like to avoid having to pay for instant life insurance coverage for smokers. Is there anyway I can do this?

Juan

Thanks for asking, Juan.

With a little self control, it’s pretty easy to slip through your medical exam without having your smoking habit detected, and thus getting out of paying for instant life insurance coverage for smokers. All you have to do is choose not to smoke for 3 or more days in advance of your physical, and your urine will be wiped clean. That is, unless you have some rare metabolism disorder, but that’s unlikely. Then you just tell your insurance company you don’t smoke, and it’s all good.

Or is it? Is it worth lying to get out of paying for instant life insurance coverage for smokers?

For some, it is, but the stakes are high. You can lie about smoking without consequences, but that’s only if you are able to keep up the lie for over 2 years. If your life insurance company discovers sometimes before then that you really do smoke, then they will cancel your policy and you’ll have trouble finding a new one. If you die during those two years and they find out, they usually won’t grant death benefits to your family.

take care,
